Reverse the Signs of Aging Today

BOTOX® AND DYSPORT®

When it comes to visible signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, neurotoxin injectables such as Dysport® and BOTOX® are two of the most common skin rejuvenation treatments worldwide.

At Metro Dermatology, our medical team has extensive knowledge of facial anatomy and specializes in creating refreshed, natural results. Metro Dermatology is located in Bronx, Elmhurst, and Flushing, New York and in Fort Lee, New Jersey. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.

What are Neurotoxins?

Derived from the botulinum toxin, neurotoxin injectables safely and effectively smooth out wrinkles and other signs of aging in the skin. While dermal fillers are injected underneath the skin, neurotoxins are administered directly into the muscle of treated areas.

Once injected, the neurotoxins block nerve signals and temporarily disable the underlying muscle activity that causes lines and wrinkles. The treated areas of the face relax, creating a younger, more alert look.

What is BOTOX®?

The most popular neurotoxin injectable for skin rejuvenation, BOTOX® is approved for use in moderate to severe lines between the eyebrows as well as for crow’s feet around the eyes. It has been studied extensively and is currently used for cosmetic purposes in 78 countries.

At Metro Dermatology in Flushing, NY, we also use BOTOX® to treat excessive underarm, palm and foot sweating in patients who experience hyperhidrosis.

As the botulinum toxin in BOTOX® is highly purified and can be dangerous if not administered properly or in the correct dosage, it is important to receive this treatment in a professional medical setting.

What is Dysport®?

Specially formulated to target moderate to severe lines in between and above the eyebrows, Dysport® is injected into multiple points around the brows to create a relaxed, more alert appearance.

Unlike other skin rejuvenation treatments that can exaggerate your features, Dysport® adds subtle, natural enhancement to your face. You will still be able to freely move your face and make natural expressions after treatment.

How Long Do Neurotoxins Last?

The rejuvenating effects of BOTOX® and Dysport® are fully visible from four to six months, depending on the individual. Although visible signs of aging will recur after the neurotoxin has worn off, lines and wrinkles can be effectively managed with regular treatment.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Slight redness, swelling, bruising and itching commonly occur at injection sites but are temporary. It is advised to avoid rubbing or massaging treated areas as the botulinum toxin can move to other areas of the face and cause weakness or drooping.

An allergy test will be conducted prior to treatment in order to avoid adverse reactions, and several factors will be considered during your consultation in order to determine if neurotoxin treatments are right for you.

What are Hyaluronic Acid Fillers?

Several dermal fillers are comprised of hyaluronic acid, a complex sugar compound that is found naturally in the body. Once injected directly underneath the skin in treated areas, hyaluronic acid combines with the water in the body to create instant volume and fullness, smoothing out wrinkles.

Additionally, treatments that utilize hyaluronic acid typically have minimal adverse reactions, as the body already this substance. Our hyaluronic acid dermal filler treatments include:

Juvederm®, which is FDA-approved for moderate to severe wrinkles around the nose and mouth.

Restylane® is designed to rejuvenate moderate to severe wrinkles in the lines that run from your nose to the corners of your mouth as well as the area below the nose and above the upper lip, the corners of the mouth and the jawline.

Voluma® is a gel formulation specifically for enhancing the cheek area due to age-related volume loss.

What Other Fillers are Available?

In addition to hyaluronic acid fillers, there are also other dermal fillers that contain natural substances recognized by the body:

Radiesse® contains Calcium Hydroxylapatite microspheres that not only provide immediate volume but also stimulate the production of your body’s own natural collagen, improving the appearance of your skin even after the filler wears off.

Sculptra® utilizes poly-L-lactic acid, a substance that has been safely used in dissolvable stitches for several years. This filler is both biodegradable and biocompatible, and works gradually to improve skin and replace lost collagen.

Are There Any Side Effects?

While temporary redness, swelling, bruising and itching are common after dermal filler injections, each dermal filler has its own set of possible side effects and risks. These will be discussed with you during your consultation with our medical team. Prior to treatment, your health, medical history, cosmetic goals and other factors will be discussed to determine if dermal fillers are right for you.

How Long Will Results Last?

While fine lines and wrinkles will return after dermal fillers wear off, they can be effectively managed with regular treatment. The full visibility of results often depends on the individual and can range anywhere from several months to a year or more.
